asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if there is evidence that some manufacturers are using technology so that analysts are unable to detect debasement of meat and meat products; if he is considering any action on this matter; and if he will make a statement.

I am aware of reports that modern processing methods have been used to replace part of the prescribed meat content in meat products with other ingredients. We are at present considering a report of the Food Standards Committee on meat products and in the light of that consideration, which will take account of the views of the Association of Public Analysts, we will decide whether new regulations are required.
