HC Deb 17 June 1981 vol 6 c373W
31. Mr. John MacKay

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what assessment has been made of the advantages and disadvantages of centralising maternity services and reducing the role of the rural maternity hospital; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Fairgrieve

No such general assessment has been made by my Department as the required balance of provision will always depend on local circumstances. It is therefore for health boards to determine the disposition of services in the light of local needs and circumstances and within the resources available to them.
