HC Deb 16 June 1981 vol 6 c295W
Mr. Wigley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much taxes, duties and national insurance was collected in Wales for the last available period; and how much was spent in the same period on goods, services, social security, debt interest, subsidies and non-capital grants.

Mr. Peter Rees

I regret that the information requested in the first part of the question is not available.

However, in 1979–80, the latest year for which figures are available identifiable current expenditure was £2,777 million. Of this, £1,489 million was current expenditure on goods and services—separate figures are not available—and £1,288 million was expenditure on subsidies and current grants. Identifiable expenditure on social security in Wales for 1979–80 was £1,014 million. The term "identifiable expenditure" refers to expenditure which can be identified from official records as having been incurred in a particular country. It has wider coverage than expenditure within the responsibility of the Secretary of State for Wales but excludes debt interest and expenditure on defence, overseas aid, and other overseas services which is incurred on behalf of the United Kingdom as a whole.
