Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total number of persons unemployed, the percentage rate of unemployment and the total number of vacancies for (a) Wolverhampton and (b) the West Midlands as at May 1981.

Unfilled Vacancies
Number unemployed Percentage rate of unemployment At employment offices At careers offices
Wolverhampton travel-to-work area 20,478 14.0 228 35
West Midlands Region 294,112 12.7 6,401 626

The vacancy statistics relate only to those notified to employment offices and careers offices; vacancies notified to employment offices are estimated to be about one-third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication the figures for employment offices and careers offices should not be added together. The number of vacancies unfilled on a particular date takes no account of the flow of vacancies being notified, filled or withdrawn during the preceding month, which may reflect activity more closely.
