HC Deb 16 June 1981 vol 6 c306W
Mr. Jim Callaghan

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest available information on the numbers of self-employed persons with or without employees (a) the United Kingdom and (b) the Greater Manchester county; and what were the figures for 1978, 1979 and 1980.

Mr. Peter Morrison

It is estimated from the 1979 European Community labour force survey that there were some 1.9 million self-employed people in the United Kingdom, of whom about 70,000 lived in Greater Manchester. Information for the other years requested is not available.
