asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the railway mileage for Sweden, Norway, Japan, West Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Wales, respectively; and what percentages of these are electrified.

At the end of 1978, the last year for which comparable information is available, the length of railway track operated by the national railway company and the percentage of this track that was electrified in each of the countries was as follows:
