HC Deb 16 June 1981 vol 6 c348W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what acreage was owned by his Department in Scotland (a) in total and (b) in each region (i) in June 1951 and (ii) at the latest available date.

Mr. Goodhart

The Ministry of Defence held the following acreages of land in the region on 1 April 1981, the latest date for which figures are readily available:

Freehold Leasehold
Borders
Central 197 6
Dumfries and Galloway 10,994 3
Fife 3,278 12
Grampian 4,877 101
Highland 7,111 6,154

Tayside 3,906 15
Orkney 383 1

There are no detailed records of Admiralty, War Office or Air Ministry holdings in Scotland in June 1951. The earliest date for which figures are available is 1 April 1966 but as this date was before the reorganisation of local government in Scotland, under which regions were introduced, it is not possible in the time available to produce the figures in this form.

Freehold Leasehold
50,059* 6,992
* This figure includes land held by ex-Ministry of Aviation establishments, which were vested in the Secretary of State for Defence on the formation of the Procurement Executive in 1972.
