HC Deb 15 June 1981 vol 6 c254W
Mr. Crowther

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether, following the acquisition of assets of Dupont and Round Oak by the British Steel Corporation and the announcement of a substantial closure of the Hadfield works, he plans to insist that any company which may be formed as a result of the Phoenix II negotiations should be outside the control of the British Steel Corporation.

Mr. Michael Marshall

We have already made it clear that we do not expect BSC to have majority control in any joint public/private company that may be formed as a result of the Phoenix II discussions.

Mr. Crowther

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what proportion of steelmaking capacity among the plants involved in the Phoenix II negotiations now rests within (a) the public sector and (b) the private sector.

Mr. Michael Marshall

Of the 3 million tonnes per year steelmaking capacity represented by the plants involved in the Phoenix II discussions,(a) 68 per cent. is currently in the public sector and (b) 32 per cent is with the private sector.
