asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the number of unemployed aged under 18 years in the Liverpool travel-to-work area at the latest date; and what it was in May 1979;

(2) what is the number of unemployed aged under 18 years in the Merseyside special development area at the latest date; and what was the number in May 1979.

[pursuant to his reply, 12 June 1981, c. 143]: The numbers registered as unemployed are analysed by age in January, April, July and October.

Temporary short-time working compensation scheme figures are not available by industry for applications made but information is available in the form requested for applications approved, and this is set out below.

Following is the information for April 1979 and April 1981:

The youth opportunities programme, which exists to help unemployed young people, will provide 82,000 opportunities in the North West, which includes Liverpool and Merseyside, this year.
