§ Mr. John Fraserasked the Secretary of State for Trade (1) if he will ensure that the consumer safety unit of his Department monitors accidents involving roller skates;
(2) if he will make regulations under the Consumer Protection Act to require minimum safety standards for roller skates.
§ Mrs. Sally OppenheimMy Department has recently received reports from some local authorities in London of roller skates "falling apart" without, however, any serious injuries to the users. My officials have asked the local authorities for details to see whether the skates' failure was due to bad manufacture and, if so, what the risks might be. It would be premature to consider establishing special arrangements to monitor accidents from roller skates or a British standard for roller skates on which regulations for controlling their sale could be based.
