HC Deb 12 June 1981 vol 6 c230W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what consideration his Department has given to the introduction of a 35-hour week without loss of pay; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

Hours and conditions of employment are a matter for employers to negotiate with their employees, but I have no doubt that they are well aware that large reductions in hours without loss of pay will lead to a significant loss of competitiveness unless there are substantial increases in productivity.
