Mr. Whitelaw

I announced on 1 June that there is to be a review of the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry by Her Majesty's inspector of constabulary for the region. The efficiency of all provincial police forces is kept under regular review by the Inspectorate of Constabulary.

25. Mr. Torney

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current establishment of the West Yorkshire police force; and how many police officers are actually in post.

Mr. Mayhew

Its authorised establishment is 5,154, and on 30 April its strength was 5,088.
