HC Deb 11 June 1981 vol 6 cc166-7W
Mr. Guy Barnett

asked the Lord Privy Seal if he will list countries in the Third world which do not now receive humanitarian aid from the United Kingdom.

Mr. Neil Marten

The following countries and territories, classified by the Development Assistance Committee of the OECD as developing, are not currently recipients of British bilateral aid. During the course of the year organisations within some of these countries or territories could benefit from small gifts of a developmental or welfare nature made available at the discretion of the British ambassador or Her Majesty's Government's representative and financed from aid programme funds.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Lord Privy Seal how many new research projects were started in 1980 as his Department's contribution towards research and development in the Third world; and how this compares with the figure for each of the past five years.

Mr. Neil Marten

As shown in the annual "Report on Research and Development" the number of new projects started was:

1975–76 1976–77 1977–78 1978–79 1979–80
176 173 159 161 101

The figures for 1980–81 are not yet available. Projects financed by international research centres to which Britain contributes have not been included.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Lord Privy Seal how much his Department spent on projects in medicine and health, building and construction in the Third world in 1980; if he will give the comparable figures for each of the last five years: and if he will list the other subject headings and amounts spent for the years in question.

Mr. Neil Marten

Figures for expenditure on project aid by economic sector for 1980 are not yet available.

Table 11 of British Aid Statistics (1975–79), which is available in the Library, provides an analysis of project aid
