HC Deb 11 June 1981 vol 6 c168W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Lord Privy Seal what was his Department's contribution towards reseach and development in the Third world in 1980; and what the contribution was for each of the past five years in 1980 prices.

Mr. Neil Marten

Based on the financial year figures reported in the "Report on Research and Development" produced annually, British aid expenditure on research and development was as follows:

expenditure by economic sector for the five years to 1979. Figures for construction refer, however, to projects to assist the construction industry. Projects in any sector may involve building and civil engineering work—for example, a new hospital or clinic in the health sector or a dam for the power or irrigation sectors. Statistics are not available on the amount of project aid spent on building and civil engineering works as distinct from other project costs—for example, equipment.
