HC Deb 11 June 1981 vol 6 cc211-2W
Mr. Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the number of prisoners in Northern Ireland currently in breach of normal prison rules regarding clothing and related aspects; what proportion they represent of convicted terrorists serving sentences in Her Majesty's prison, Maze; and how many are currently refusing food or medical treatment.

Mr. Humphrey Atkins

[pursuant to his reply, 9 June 1981]: Of the 916 prisoners currently serving sentences for terrorist-type offences in Maze cellular prison 409, about 45 per cent. are refusing both to wear prison-issue civilian clothing and to work. Another 14 prisoners are refusing to work.

Five prisoners are refusing food. They are co-operating with the doctors, but are refusing medical treatment.

This information does not include 328 prisoners housed in Maze compound prison.
