HC Deb 11 June 1981 vol 6 cc188-9W
Mr. Higgins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, how the number now employed by the Inland Revenue on valuation for domestic rating purposes compares with the number employed when the last full quinquennial and last partial revaluation took place.

Sir Geoffrey Howe

[pursuant to his reply, 8 June 1981, c.16]: Approximately 2,250 staff in the Inland Revenue are currently employed on valuation for domestic rating purposes. There has never been a partial revaluation, but at the time of the last revaluation in 1973 around 4,500 staff were concerned with domestic rating.

Mr. Higgins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, how many people are at present employed in the Inland Revenue on revaluation for domestic rating purposes; and what was the total cost of the work in the last full year for which figures are available

Sir Geoffrey Howe

[pursuant to his reply, 8 June 1981, c. 16]: No staff are currently employed by the Inland Revenue on revaluation for domestic rating purposes. When the general rating revaluation scheduled for 1982 was cancelled in June 1979 preliminary work had been in hand since September 1978. The total cost of this work was about £5 million; it is not possible to isolate the extent to which this cost related solely to domestic revaluation.
