Mr. Foster

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will commission an investigation into the destinations of handicapped schoolchildren who attain school leaving age to discover whether they (a) stayed on at school, (b) went into full-time further education, (c) proceeded into full-time or part-time work, (d) registered as unemployed, (e) entered adult training centres, (f) entered a Manpower Services Commission scheme and (g) entered any other sheltered workshop scheme.

The Department is at present considering what statistics should be collected when the new arrangements which are proposed in the Education Bill for the assessment of children with special educational needs and the maintenance of statements for such children come into effect.
