Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what were the numbers of entries from maintained secondary schools in 1978–79 for French at CSE, O and A-level, respectively; and what were the numbers of passes at higher grades and in total.

Dr. Boyson

It is estimated that, of the 643,800 leavers from English maintained schools in 1978–79, 98,200 had attempted CSE, but not O-level examinations in French, 103,500 had attempted O-level and 13,700 had attempted A-level in French. CSE grade 1 but no O-level grades A to C was achieved by 12,700, O-level grades A to C were achieved by 65,400. Other grades at CSE or O-level were achieved by 108,500. A-level passes in French were achieved by 10,200 leavers.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what were the numbers of sixth form pupils taking French at O-level in maintained secondary schools in 1977.
