HC Deb 09 June 1981 vol 6 c82W
Mr. Bendall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will now announce an increase in London taxi fares.

Mr. Whitelaw

I have made an order increasing London taxi fares with effect from 12 July. The new tariff will incorporate a minimum fare of 50p—including a hiring charge of 30p—for the first 708 yards or 3 minutes 36 seconds. The rate will then be 10p for each 354 yards or 1 minute 48 seconds up to 6 miles and 10p for each 236 yards or 1 minute 12 seconds thereafter. This will mean an average increase in fares of 13 per cent.

There will be no change in any of the extra charges and there will be no additional charge for radio bookings.
