asked the Secretary of State for Industry to what extent the share of wages and salaries in total income generated by manufacturing industry has increased during the past decade.

[pursuant to his reply, 3 June 1981, c. 362]: The share during the years 1969 to 1979 is shown by the following table. I regret that figures are not yet available for 1930.

Note:

Total income is before providing for depreciaton. The other components of total income—or gross value added—are employers' contributions for national insurance, pensions and so on—8.0 per cent. of total income in 1979—gross trading profits of companies, self-employment income and gross trading surpluses of public corporations.
