HC Deb 09 June 1981 vol 6 c105W
Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Waleshow many people are engaged in community enterprise programmes in the travel-to-work areas of Bridgend and Maesteg.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Information is not available in respect of individual local offices. However, I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that, at the end of April 1981, about 200. persons were participating in the community enterprise programme in Mid-Glamorgan.

Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many persons are taking part in the youth opportunity programmes in the travel-to-work areas of Bridgend, Cymmer and Maesteg; and whether there are sufficient places available in the programmes in these areas for the unemployed young people who wish to participate in the scheme.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Information is not available in the precise form requested. At 14 May 1981, however, the number of young people participating in the youth Opportunity programme in the area covered by the Brigend careers office was 524. In view of the anticipated numbers of school leavers in the coming year the Manpower Services Commission has planned for a considerable expansion in the youth opportunities programme throughout the country and will be making strenous efforts to encourage sponsors to come forward with additional places in this and other areas.
