HC Deb 08 June 1981 vol 6 c11W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the actual or estimated costs of the investigations by the police and the arrest and trial of Peter Sutcliffe for murder.

Mr. Mayhew

This was a long and complex inquiry involving a large number of officers from several different police forces. It would be difficult to give an exact figure for the costs of the inquiry, but at the trial of Mr. Sutcliffe it was estimated that the cost may have been in the region of £4 million. I understand that the legal costs of the trial have not yet been ascertained.
