HC Deb 08 June 1981 vol 6 c45W
7 Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Energy when he now expects the United Kingdom to be a net exporter of oil.

Mr. Gray

In the first three months of this year total United Kingdom oil production was about 21½ million tonnes and United Kingdom consumption about 20 million tonnes. Production could exceed consumption throughout the 1980's. But there are many uncertainties and technical and seasonal factors could affect the balance at any one particular time. The net balance will continue to include imports of some heavier crudes to meet United Kingdom refining requirements, offset by exports of United Kingdom production.
