HC Deb 08 June 1981 vol 6 c48W
Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what is his general policy on oil exploration if it conflicts with environmental considerations.

Mr. Gray

The Government's policy is to achieve the development of the nation's indigenous oil and gas resources in an orderly and safe manner which pays due regard to environmental factors. To this end the arrangements for petroleum licensing in both landward and seaward areas contain provisions designed to ensure that licence operations cause minimum disturbance to the environment.
