Mr. Lambie

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many applicants educated at Scottish schools were awarded national engineering scholarhsips in the years 1978, 1979, 1980, and 1981 in the (a) public sector and (b) private sector.

Mr. Macfarlane

The number of applicants educated at Scottish schools who were awarded national engineering scholarships since the scheme began in 1978, in the public and private sectors were as follows:

Public Sector Private Sector Total
1978 3 1 4
1979 16 1 17
1980 21 6 27

The results of the 1981 competition will not be known until November.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many national engineering scholarships were awarded to students undertaking a degree course at a Scottish university in the years 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Mr. Macfarlane

The number of national engineering scholarships awarded to students undertaking a degree course at a Scottish university since the scheme was introduced in 1978 is as follows:

1978 4
1979 14
1980 26

The results of the 1981 competiton will not be known until November.

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the names and qualifications of the members of the Actin committee who select candidates for interview by the selection boards for national engineering scholarships.
