HC Deb 08 June 1981 vol 6 c30W
Mrs. Dunwoody

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether, following the report on primary health care in inner London, he intends to set up an inspectorate to examine the surgery premises of general practitioners in the London area with a view to ascertaining whether they comply fully with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act.

Dr. Vaughan

The report points out that the Health and Safety Executive will be undertaking routine inspections of practice premises in the next few years.

Responsibility for ensuring that a family doctor provides proper and sufficient accommodation for general medical services rests with family practitioner committees (FPCs) who are already empowered, under the provisions of the doctors' terms of service, to inspect surgery premises. This will be among the issues that I shall be discussing with FPCs and representative bodies in the course of following up the report.
