HC Deb 08 June 1981 vol 6 c28W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will estimate the number of citizens of the Republic of Ireland presently living or working or both in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Adam Butler

According to estimates from the labour force survey taken between March and May 1979, 34,000 persons usually resident in private households in Northern Ireland were citizens of the Irish Republic. Eleven thousand of the 22,000 who were aged 16 or over at the time of the survey were in employment.
