§ Mr. Mark CarlisleExpenditure by my Department on research and other commissioned work, including that of committees of inquiry, amounted to £4.5 million in the financial year 1980–81. This includes grants totalling £1.5 million to the Schools Council, the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation and the National Foundation for Educational Research. Figures of expenditure on commissioned work by other grant-aided institutions could not be provided without disproportionate cost.
