HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c699W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many youth opportunities programme places there will be in the London area by the end of 1981–82; how many of these he expects to be taken up by school leavers; and whether there will be sufficient places to ensure that all Easter or summer 1981 school leavers will be catered for if unemployed by Christmas 1981, and that all other young persons aged 16 and 17 years will be offered a youth opportunities programme place if they have been out of work for at least three months.

Mr. Peter Morrison

It was originally planned that 17,000 young people should enter the programme in Greater London in 1981–82, of whom 11,000 were expected to be 1981 school leavers. As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced on Monday 27 July, the programme is to be increased to ensure that the undertakings to school leavers and other 16 to 17-year-olds are met. This should bring the total entrants to the programme in 1981–82 in Greater London to 20,000.
