asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will publish details of the effect of the Royal Ulster Constabulary campaign against drunken drivers has had on the number of road deaths; and how the statistics compare with the same period in 1979 and 1980.

In the year ended 31 May 1981, driving under the influence of alcohol is believed to have been the principal cause of 148 road accidents. Twenty-six people died in those accidents. The same statistics for the years ended 31 May 1980 and 31 May 1979 are 171 accidents, 42 killed, and 148 accidents, 34 killed, respectively.
