HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c574W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Energy if he plans to take any initiatives to promote the application of microwave energy in the nuclear fuel cycle.

Mr. Norman Lamont

Research and development has been conducted by the UKAEA for some years on a process using microwave heating for the conversion of highly active liquid waste to glass, since this form of heating appears to offer certain advantages compared with the use of conventional resistance heated electric furnaces. The process is at the stage of inactive pilot plant studies. Other applications for microwave heating are also being considered.
