HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c650W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current strength of the Metropolitan Police; what is the ratio of police to population; and what figures he has for comparable cities such as New York, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam, Madrid, Brussels and West Berlin.

Mr. Whitelaw

At the end of June the strength of the Metropolitan Police was 24,428, giving a police-population ratio of about 1: 300. No readily comparable figures for the other cities mentioned are available.

Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what staff at the Home Office are specifically concerned with his role as police authority for London; and whether any member of staff is exclusively concerned with that role.

Mr. Whitelaw

It is the main, but not exclusive, concern of three officials. However, all parts of the police department advise me on my responsibilities as police authority for the Metropolitan Police, according to the subject under consideration.
