asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) if he will make a statement on the industrial strategy review published in January 1981;

(2) whether he considers that the 48,000 jobs planned in the next five years by the industrial strategy review are sufficient, in view of the present figure of over 100,000 unemployed;

(3) if he is satisfied that his Department will be able to create 48,000 jobs in the next five years in Northern Ireland as envisaged in the industrial strategy review.

[pursuant to his reply, 30 July 1981]: No such review was published. In consultation with the industrial development consultative forum, officials are currently in the course of preparing a document which explains the objectives, operation and likely impact of the industrial development effort in Northern Ireland. It is hoped to publish this document shortly.

measures to improve the service by greater co-ordination of the statutory and voluntary sectors: the Council for Continuing Education will be asked to advise on the co-ordination and development of the service; education and library boards will be encouraged to develop such services, as and when resources permit, on the lines pioneered by the Belfast education and library board, and the Department of Education will discuss funding arrangements with the Association of Recurrent Education.
