HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 cc570-1W
Mr. George Cunningham

asked the Lord Privy Seal how much aid has been provided by the Government to Grenada during each of the last four years and on what principal projects; what request has been made by Grenada for aid towards a new international airport; and what policy has been adopted towards that project by the United Kingdom bilaterally and in the European Community.

Mr. Neil Marten

United Kingdom bilateral aid to Grenada over the last four years was as follows:

£000
1977 483
1978 321
1979 252
1980 259

Over this period major projects have included reconstruction work on the Woburn-Calivagny road—£400,000—the building of Happy Hill junior school—£285,000—the Grenadian participation in the Windward Islands five-year banana development programme—£183,000—and an emergency bridges repair programme—£162,000.

With regard to the proposed international airport, the Grenadian Government have sought and received help from the Cuban Government and have made a formal request for assistance from the European development fund. This is still being considered by the Commission and has not yet been put forward for formal consideration by member States. No British bilateral aid has been officially requested for the project.
