HC Deb 31 July 1981 vol 9 c675W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he is satisfied with the supply of cannabis for patients suffering from various forms of cancer; if he will investigate the reasons for any shortages; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

Cannabis is not commercially marketed as a medicine. It is subject to restrictions under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Unlike most other controlled drugs, it does not have a recognised medical use at present. Clinical trials are in progress in the United Kingdom to test the value of the drug in controlling the side effects of cancer chemotherapy, and the outcome of these is awaited.
