asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations were made to his Department on 22 July with regard to statistics on the registration of the blind and partially sighted by the executive officer of the Association of Optical Practitioners; what reply is being sent; what action he is taking; and if he will make a statement.

A letter from the executive officer of the Association of Optical Practitioners addressed to the director of statistics was received on 24 July. It seeks clarification on the future collection of statistics relating to the blind and partially sighted and to the causes of blindness. A copy of the reply which is now being prepared will be sent to the right hon. Gentleman.
