HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 c510W
Mrs. Faith

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total amount spent in 1980–81 on grants to universities (a) from the University Grants Committee and (b) from local authorities for fees and so on; how much was spent on grants from local authorities to students for maintenance; and what he expects the comparable figure to be for 1983–84.

Dr. Boyson

Recurrent and capital grants to universities totalled £1,040 million in the financial year 1980–81. Information on payment of fees and maintenance by local authorities in that year is not yet available. As indicated in Cnmd. 8175, the detailed implications of the Government's expenditure plans for the university and non-university sectors are under discussion with the University Grants Committee and local authority associations and the exact apportionment of the total resources available in 1983–84 has yet to be settled.
