HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 c476W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people working in the United Kingdom paper and board industry were made redundant in 1980; and how many have been made redundant so far in the current year.

Mr. Peter Morrison

There is no comprehensive statistics of redundancies. The number of redundancies, involving 10 or more employees, reported to the Manpower Services Commission as due to occur in the paper and board industry—SIC minimum list heading 481—in Great Britain in 1980 is 5,271; in 1981 up to and including June the number so far reported is 3,153* including provisional figures for May and June.

* Note: Figures for February 1981 or later are not fully comparable with those for January 1981 and earlier, because of improvements in data collection designed to secure a better coverage of reported redundancies which are actually expected to take place.
