Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the amount collected in national health insurance charges and surcharges from employers and employed, respectively, in the last financial year.

Mrs. Chalker

I have been asked to reply.

The national health and national insurance surcharge elements of the national insurance contribution in 1980–81 are estimated to be £1,034 million and £3,477 million respectively of which £4,084 million was contributed by employers.
