HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 c485W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether there is an upper limit on the amount of mortgage interest payable by his Department on behalf of supplementary benefit claimants.

Mrs. Chalker

There is no upper limit on the amount of mortgage interest which can be included in the assessment of an owner occupier's supplementary benefit housing requirement. Regulation 21 of the Supplementary Benefit (Requirements) Regulations, as amended, provides for restriction of an amount applicable to housing requirement where this is excessive.
