HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 c501W
Mr. Heddle

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the total increase in manufacturing wages and salaries per unit of output in the United Kingdom since June 1979; and whether he will give comparable figures for France, West Germany and Japan over the same period.

Mr. Brittan

Unit wage and salary costs in United Kingdom manufacturing rose by 32 per cent. between June 1979 and March this year compared with 9 per cent. for West Germany and 3 per cent. for Japan. The latest figure for France relates to the fourth quarter of 1980 and shows an increase of 21 per cent. since the second quarter of 1979.
