HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 cc516-7W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland whether he will engage public relations consultants to improve the presentation of the case for the continuance of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom.

Mr. Humphrey Atkins

The majority of the people of Northern Ireland have indicated clearly through the ballot box that they wish to remain part of the United Kingdom. The Government take every opportunity to explain both at home and abroad the constitutional position of the Province within the United Kingdom. I have no plans to appoint public relations consultants.

Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what publications have been issued to present the case for the continuance of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom; and what is their distribution at home and abroad.

Mr. Humphrey Atkins

The constitutional position of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom, its history and the legislation under which it is governed are clearly set out in two Government publications. Both of these—the Ulster Year Book and a booklet entitled Northern Ireland—are given a wide distribution both at home and abroad, particularly in the United States of America. The position is also frequently presented through Government statements which are widely publicised in the media in the United Kingdom and overseas.
