HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 c460W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the gaseous sensory irritants, lacrimators and sternutators available to the police in controlling riots, together with their primary actions and the prolonged atoxic effects which they could have on innocent bystanders.

Mr. Mayhew

The only such material available to the police at the present time is CS-orthochlorobenzylidene malononitrile. A detailed assessment of the medical and toxological aspects of the use of this agent is contained in the "Report of the enquiry into the Medical and Toxicological aspects of CS", Cmnd 4173 and 4775.
