HC Deb 30 July 1981 vol 9 cc483-4W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the present incidence of cervical cancer; and if he will publish figures showing whether there has been an increase or a decrease in this form of cancer when compared with 1971.

Sir George Young

The latest available figures for numbers and for the rates of new registrations for cervical cancer per 100,000 of the female population of all ages are:

ICD 180 Malignant neoplasm of cervix uteri excluding in situ ICD 234.0 Carcinoma in situ of cervix uteri
Year No. Rate No. Rate
1971 4,090 16.3 2,214 8.8
1972 3,943 15.6 2,320 9.2
1973 4,065 16.1 2,580 10.2
1974 4,042 16.0 2,991 11.8
1975 4,031 16.0 3,186 12.6
1976 3,964 15.7 3,634 14.4

The considerable rise in new registrations of carcinoma in situ of the cervix may well reflect increasing ascertainment resulting from an increase in screening.
