§ Mr. Alfred Morrisasked the Lord Privy Seal if he will press the Council of Ministers at its next meeting to give a mandate to the EEC Commission to open negotiations with the International Sugar Organisation with a view to obtaining membership or associate membership of that organisation in an effort to stabilise the world free market price of sugar and so benefit cane sugar producers in the developing countries.
§ Sir Ian GilmourThe United Kingdom has consistently supported Community membership of the International Sugar Organisation, which in our view would help to stabilise the world sugar market to the benefit of producers and consumers alike. Discussions are already under way in the Community on a negotiating mandate for the Commission. We will do our best to bring these discussions to a constructive conclusion.
