HC Deb 16 July 1981 vol 8 c465W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to monitor the effect upon education in technological subjects of the cuts in expenditure in both universities and polytechnics.

Dr. Boyson

The University Grants Committee's allocation of recurrent grant for 1981–82 and its provisional indications to 1983–84 provide an increase in students of engineering and technology. Education in these subjects will be kept under review.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what is or will be the overall reduction or increase in the numbers of students taking courses in technological subjects as a result of the recently announced cuts in financial allocations to universities;

(2) if he will list all those universities which have been told to cut back on technological subjects and give the number of places affected in each; and if he will also list those universities which have been told to increase their numbers in these subjects, again with the numbers involved.

Dr. Boyson

The University Grants Committee's allocation of grant for 1981–82 and its provisional indications to 1983–84 provide for an overall increase in students of engineering and technology. The student target numbers proposed by the committee relate only to the broad categories of arts, science and medicine. The Committee's advice to individual universities on particular subject areas is given in its chairman's letter to each university of 1 July, copies of which are in the Library.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list all those universities which had students graduating from them in technological subjects in 1980, with the numbers involved; and what information there is on what percentage of them in each case subsequently obtained jobs.
