HC Deb 16 July 1981 vol 8 c449W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what has been the percentage increase in (a) total unemployment and (b) male unemployment in Scotland and each of the four Scottish cities from May 1979 to June 1981 taking the May 1979 rate in each case equal to 100.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Table 1 below shows the percentage increase in total and male unemployment in the areas specified between May 1979 and June 1981. Table 2 below shows the June 1981 unemployment rates expressed as a percentage of the May 1979 rate, raking the May 1979 rate as the base.

Aberdeen 86.6 76.9
Dundee 86.9 84.7
Edinburgh 66.1 62.7

Table 2

Notes

  1. 1. The figures in Table 1 relate to employment office areas. The Edinburgh figures include Leith and Portobello and the Glasgow figures include all the employment office areas within Glasgow City.
  2. 2. Percentage rates are not available for Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow which form parts of wider travel-to-work areas. The figures in Table 2 relate therefore to travel-to-work areas.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people were unemployed in Scotland and each of the four Scottish cities in June 1966 and June 1981.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
