HC Deb 16 July 1981 vol 8 c471W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when the new hospital at Tooting was started; when he expects the building work to be completed; if the premises to accommodate the dental school have yet been started; when they will come into operation; how many dental students will be accommodated; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Vaughan

The medical school was opened in 1976, and phase I of the hospital in 1980. Some research laboratories were also completed in 1980, and work on others is due to start in September 1981. Phase II of the hospital is due to start in October 1982 and to be completed in 1987. Preclinical accommodation for the dental school opened in 1976. The annual undergraduate student intake is 45 with a planned increase, subject to confirmation, to 64. Plans to redevelop the Royal dental hospital, at present at Leicester Square, are being considered by the Department, the South West Thames regional health authority and the University of London.
