asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he intends to establish a new advisory committee for maternity and neonatal services on the lines recommended by the Social Services Committee in its report on perinatal and neonatal mortality.

After consultation with the professional groups, my right hon. Friend with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales has decided to establish a maternity services advisory committee, initially for a period of three years, with the following terms of referenceTo advise on matters relating to the maternity and neonatal services remitted by the Secretaries of State for Social Services and for Wales".

I am glad to say that Mrs. Alison Munro, CBE, Chairman of Merton, Sutton and Wandsworth area health authority—Teaching—has accepted an invitation to serve as chairman. The relevant professional bodies will be asked to put forward urgently nominations for membership.
