HC Deb 13 July 1981 vol 8 cc314-5W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a table for both Dundee and Scotland for unemployment in the following occupations at present showing the number and percentage of total unemployed (a) managerial and professional, (b) clerical and related, (c) other non-manual, (d) craft and foremen, (e) general labourers and (f) other manual; and how these figures compare with May 1979.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

Information is not available in the precise form requested. The following table gives the numbers of unemployed people registered at the employment office in Dundee for employment in the specified occupations in March 1981, the latest date for which information is available, and in June 1979, the nearest date to May 1979 for which information is available.

Mr. Rifkind

Local authorities in Scotland do not have powers specifically related to the development of workers co-operatives, but section 7 of the Local Government (Development and Finance) (Scotland) Act 1964 allows a local authority to advance money, under certain conditions, to enable any person to erect a building on land which it has made available for this purpose. There are several general provisions in the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1972 and the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 which local authorities could in certain circumstances use for industry-related purposes, notably Section 83 of the latter act.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the number of workers employed in workers co-operatives in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

There are no official estimates of the number of people employed in workers co-operatives in Scotland.
